According to the Student Press Law Center, journalism students worldwide often face censorship or feel pressured to self-censor preemptively. Student Press Freedom Day celebrates student journalists' contributions, raises awareness of the challenges they face, and arms them with the resources they need to assert their rights.
Hosted by the SPLC, the 2022 mission is to encourage journalists-in-training to stop self-censoring and tell their stories. Simply put, "Unmute Yourself!"
"We want to focus attention on student journalists' right to publish truthfully without inhibition, to tell the stories most important to their communities free from censorship – and from self-censorship." - SPLC
